Releasing Expectations: How to Move On

Updated: Dec 27, 2024

At some point in life, we all face the disappointment of unmet expectations. Whether it’s excitement for a new opportunity or a clear vision of how a situation will unfold, things don’t always go as planned. When this happens, you might find yourself stuck in thoughts like, “I can’t believe this happened” or “What do I do now?”

For high achievers (like myself) or those who hold themselves and others to high standards, unmet expectations can be especially difficult to navigate. The feelings of exhaustion, inadequacy, and a lack of motivation to move forward can feel overwhelming.

Yet, one defining trait of high achievers is their resilience. Even while grappling with disappointment, they often feel a strong urge to move forward and tackle the next challenge. But moving ahead without releasing expectations can feel like being stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Why Releasing Expectations Matters

When we hold tightly to expectations, we often set ourselves up for frustration and self-doubt when things don’t go as planned. Releasing expectations doesn’t mean giving up on goals or aspirations—it means letting go of rigid ideas about how things "should" happen and making space for growth, reflection, and new possibilities.

Learning to release expectations is essential for freeing yourself from emotional weight and reclaiming your energy to move forward.

How to Begin Releasing Expectations

Start by reflecting on your current situation. Ask yourself these questions:

  • What about this project or opportunity are you hooked to?

  • What specific element or detail are you so attached to?

  • What need are you trying to satisfy by pursuing this goal?

  • What is currently lacking in your life that you thought this opportunity would fulfill?

These questions can help you uncover the root of your unmet expectations. For example, are you seeking recognition, connection, or validation? Identifying the underlying need is the first step in learning how to release those expectations.

Steps to Move Forward After Releasing Expectations

Once you understand your unmet need, here’s how to begin letting go and creating new opportunities:

1. Sit with the Feeling

Acknowledge your disappointment and allow yourself to feel the emotions without judgment. Accepting the situation as it is can help you start the process of releasing expectations and moving forward.

2. Identify What’s in Your Control

Shifting your focus to actionable steps can empower you to take charge of what’s next. Reflect on what you can influence and let go of the rest.

3. Create Alternative Scenarios

Brainstorm three new ways to meet your needs or goals. Reframing the situation allows you to open up to new paths and possibilities.

Example: Laura’s Journey to Release Expectations

Laura, a 27-year-old software engineer, felt underwhelmed in her job. She was excited about a new project, but when it fell through, she began questioning her value and felt demoralized.

By reflecting on her situation, Laura realized she was seeking more challenges and recognition at work. Here’s how she moved forward:

  • Talked to Her Boss: She expressed her feelings and collaboratively explored ways to improve her work satisfaction.

  • Kept the Status Quo: Laura found ways to make her current role more fulfilling by focusing on personal development.

  • Explored New Opportunities: She began looking for a role that aligned better with her goals.

The Power of Releasing Expectations

Unmet expectations are an inevitable part of life, but they also offer a unique opportunity to pause, reflect, and grow. By releasing expectations and focusing on what truly matters, you can regain clarity, purpose, and motivation.

Take the time to reflect, let go of rigid outcomes, and explore new possibilities. Releasing expectations isn’t about giving up—it’s about opening yourself to the opportunities that await.
