App Review: Habits, Helping you Stay on Track?

Updated: Dec 27, 2024

As I continue my quest for the perfect habit-tracking app, I find myself wondering: Can a simple app on your phone truly help you make lasting changes?

The short answer? It depends. While many habit apps offer useful features, one critical element is often missing: the foundational knowledge to use the app effectively. Without understanding how to build and sustain habits, even the best tools can fall short.

Let’s dive into my app review of ‘Habits’ and explore why it may (or may not) be the right fit for you.

1. Plain Interface

The app features a very plain design. While simplicity can sometimes be a strength, this app misses the opportunity to use color psychology to boost motivation and engagement. A visually stimulating interface could go a long way in making habit-tracking more enjoyable.

2. Limited Habit Tracking

Habits restricts habits to once per day. This limitation makes it impractical for users with goals that require multiple daily repetitions, such as drinking four bottles of water or taking medication at different times.

3. Lack of Positive Reinforcement

One of the biggest drawbacks is the absence of positive reinforcement. There’s no congratulatory message or fun animation to celebrate completing a habit. This lack of encouragement can make the experience feel uninspiring.

4. No Playfulness or Motivation

For users who thrive on motivation through playful design, this app will disappoint. It lacks fanfare, gamification, or any element of fun. Instead, it leaves you longing for a burst of excitement—like jumping into an IKEA ball pit!

What’s Missing?

Habit apps can be incredibly effective, but only when paired with strategies rooted in habit formation science. Key elements that this app lacks include:

  • Positive Reinforcement: Encouragement boosts motivation and helps reinforce consistency.

  • Customization: Flexible habit tracking to accommodate goals with varying frequencies.

  • Engaging Design: A visually appealing interface can make users excited to interact with the app daily.

App Review Bottom Line

While Habits may work for those who prefer a minimalist approach, it falls short for users seeking a dynamic, engaging experience. Habit formation requires more than ticking off a box—it’s about creating a system that motivates, encourages, and supports your journey toward lasting change.

If you’re looking for an app that combines science, fun, and flexibility, this might not be the one for you. But don’t give up! There are plenty of apps out there waiting to help you level up your habits.
