How many times have you pushed yourself to complete a task before relaxing? How often have you cleaned the kitchen just one more time, before leaning into a new book? For years I prioritized doing something that felt productive before taking care of my own needs.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) research shows that two key activities can significantly improve mood: doing things that bring you pleasure and activities that give you a sense of productivity. In today’s world, where burnout and overwork often go hand-in-hand with our concept of productivity, finding this balance is more important than ever.
For many, crossing tasks off a to-do list brings a satisfying sense of control. Control often feels like a natural way to manage life’s unpredictability—whether we’re aware of it or not. I used to be trapped in this cycle for years. But productivity isn’t just about endless work; it’s about focusing on what truly fulfills and energizes us.
Building Your Daily Routine: Tips for Success
Ready to maximize your time and mood? Whether you’re tackling work tasks or making time for hobbies, these strategies can help you make the most of every day.
1. Rise and Shine
Your most productive days often start early. Aim to wake up by 7 a.m. to set the tone for the day. Adjusting your sleep schedule can be tough, but after a week of consistency, your body will adapt. Start your day by splashing cold water on your face, brushing your teeth, playing your favourite beats (Try Happy Morning Handpan on Spotify) and sipping your favorite morning drink.
2. Write It Down
Documenting your tasks—whether digitally or in a physical agenda—helps you stay on track. List all the things you need to get done. The list all the things you want to do and enjoy.
3. Prioritize Your Tasks
Organize your tasks by deadlines. Break them down by month, week, and day to stay ahead of your goals and avoid last-minute stress.
4.Reward Yourself with Fun Tasks First!
Start your day on high note by prioritizing yourself with an enjoyable task. Whether it’s practicing a hobby or completing something creative. So many of us get caught in procrastinating with something useless, like scrolling on social media. Then we end up not having enough time to do something that brings us pleasure once we actually do finish the tasks we need. So try filling your pleasure cup first. So many of my clients have really benefited from this simple switch.
5. Switch It Up
Once you’ve danced your heart out, cleared the next video game level or taken a calming bath and are ready to cross some tasks off your list, focus on switching it up. Instead of traditional breaks, try switching tasks. For example, take a break from a work project to fold laundry, prep dinner, or tackle another item on your list. This keeps your energy up and allows you to stay productive.
Why This Works
By intentionally combining pleasure and productivity, focusing first on pleasure, you can create a daily routine that supports your mood and builds momentum. Productivity doesn’t have to mean overwork—it’s about showing up for yourself in a way that feels energizing and fulfilling.
Take Charge of Your Day
What would your routine look like if you embraced these strategies? Start each morning with clarity, prioritize your tasks with purpose, and finish your day with meaningful accomplishments, and feeling good because you did you first. With small, intentional habits, you can infuse your days with joy, purpose, and balance.
